Iberdrola began construction of the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm in the UK. It will have a total capacity of 1,400 megawatts (MW). This is enough power to supply 1.3 Million homes with clean energy. This is more than the combined population of Liverpool and Glasgow.
The new facility is located near London, on the coast of Norfolk. It will be part of the East Anglia hub macro-complex. This complex also includes the East Anglia One North, East Anglia Two, and future East Anglia One North developments. This hub, the largest Iberdrola initiative in this technology worldwide, will require an investment of PS6.5billion (around EUR7.7billion) to install 3,000 MW. This is 6% of the UK’s 2030 offshore wind energy target of 50 GW.
This farm will be added to the one that the company operates through ScottishPower in the same region, East Anglia One. It has 714 MW and can produce renewable energy for 630,000 British households.
Construction work has already begun on the ground for this plant. It is scheduled to begin production in 2026. In collaboration with Siemens, the initial phase will see the installation of an onshore substation in Suffolk that will connect the park and the National Grid electricity grid. The cable route was also awarded to NKT.
East Anglia Three will span a total of 305 square kilometers and will require more than 100 new generation wind turbines. These will reach up to 247 metres in height, roughly two-and-a-half times the size of Big Ben’s (96 meters).
The major electricity infrastructure will include four offshore substations, an off-shore platform to accommodate operations accommodation and four submarine cables to export the energy from the wind farm. It is located 69 km offshore to the coast.
The East Anglia hub will be a major boost for the UK’s offshore wind supply chain. It will also create up to 7,000 new jobs.
