Iberdrola’s El Escudo Wind Farm Secures Permit for 101 MW Project

The El Escudo wind farm has received approval to continue preliminary construction work after developer Biocantaber, in which Iberdrola España holds a stake, secured the building permit.

With a capacity of 101 MW, the wind farm will generate renewable energy equivalent to the annual consumption of 95,300 households and prevent the emission of 45,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Initial construction work, which has already commenced under Prior Administrative Authorisation (AAP), includes the development of internal access roads, foundations for the future power line, and leveling the land for the substation that will collect the renewable energy produced by the wind turbines.

The El Escudo wind farm is the first in Spain to use Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, which provides detailed control over construction and implements measures to reduce environmental impact. This digital model is developed by INGECID, a Cantabrian company associated with the Santander School of Civil Engineering.

The wind farm will feature 24 turbines, with 23 located in the municipalities of Molledo, Luena, and Campoo de Yuso, along with the electrical substation. The final turbine will be installed in the municipality of Aguayo. Building permits are already in place for the three primary municipalities.

The project involves an investment of €120 million, with a significant portion of the construction budget allocated to local companies. This investment is expected to create up to 200 jobs during peak construction periods. The wind farm fosters a comprehensive value chain among local companies in various sectors, including civil works, electrical engineering, logistics, maintenance, security, and telecommunications, along with professionals overseeing the work to minimize impacts on nature and heritage.
