The year 2024 witnessed significant advancements in renewable energy, with wind energy securing a prominent role in the sector’s growth trajectory. Here’s a closer look at the developments shaping wind energy’s future.
Record Wind Energy Capacity Addition
Wind energy installations saw remarkable progress, with 3,223 MW added in the first eleven months of 2024, boosting the total installed capacity to an impressive 47,959 MW. This growth complements the 20,849 MW of solar energy added in the same period, reflecting India’s commitment to accelerating its renewable energy journey.
Open Access Drives Wind Energy Adoption
Open access—a model allowing electricity generators to sell power directly to consumers—gained substantial momentum. 4.8 GW of open access capacity was added in the first nine months of 2024, significantly higher than the 2.8 GW added in the same period last year. Notably, wind energy played a critical role in open access installations across key states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
Wind Tariffs Witness Regional Variations
Wind tariffs exhibited regional disparities, influenced by varying wind speeds across states. While Gujarat’s tariffs hovered between ₹3.24-3.30 per kWh, other regions saw rates rise to ₹3.60-3.70 per kWh. Notably, JSW Neo secured 350 MW capacity at ₹3.61 per kWh in a recent bid, showcasing the growing competitiveness in the sector.
Rise of Wind-Solar Hybrid Auctions
A major development in 2024 was the surge in wind-solar hybrid projects. With 13 auctions awarding or proposing 11.2 GW of capacity, hybrid projects are increasingly preferred due to their efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Tariffs for these projects ranged between ₹3.15 and ₹3.65 per kWh, falling below standalone wind project rates, signaling a shift in industry dynamics.
IPO Success Signals Investor Confidence
The renewable energy sector’s growth attracted investor interest, evidenced by the successful IPOs of companies like Premier Energies and Waaree. The rising focus on wind energy further cements the industry’s investment appeal.
Looking Ahead
As India continues its renewable energy drive, wind energy is poised to play a pivotal role. The increasing adoption of open access, advancements in hybrid technologies, and favorable tariff trends underline wind energy’s potential to power India’s clean energy future.
