Offshore wind energy is expanding rapidly both globally and in the U.S. As of May 31, 2024, the U.S. had 174 megawatts of offshore wind power in operation and approximately 25,116 megawatts in development, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Offshore Wind Market Report: 2024 Edition.
While offshore wind has the potential to power millions of homes, its development also impacts marine ecosystems, Tribal communities, cultural resources, and economic opportunities. Ensuring that Tribal Nations have a voice in offshore wind planning is essential to addressing their needs, priorities, and challenges.
To support this effort, NREL, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), launched the Capacity Accelerator for Tribal Offshore Wind Engagement on January 14, 2025. This initiative provides $7.1 million in cash awards and technical assistance to help Tribal Nations and Tribal collaboratives engage in offshore wind-related decision-making.
Participation in the program does not indicate support for offshore wind but instead equips Tribal communities with the resources and expertise needed to take part in planning discussions that may affect their lands and waters. This initiative is open to applications from federally recognized Tribal Nations and Tribal collaboratives. Awards may be given to individual Tribes or collaboratives, ensuring support for those that may face geographic or priority-related barriers. The program also encourages broader collaboration among Tribes and other relevant organizations.
Interested participants are invited to an informational webinar on February 13, 2025, to learn more about the capacity accelerator, eligibility criteria, and application process. Registration is available via Zoom, and a recording will be posted on HeroX, the official prize platform, after the event.
