RWE Secures Success in Italian Renewables Auction with Two New Wind Farms

Two RWE wind farms were successful in the latest Italian renewables auction: the 45-megawatt (MW) Venusia wind farm in the province of Potenza, Basilicata, and the 48 MW Serra Palino wind farm in the province of Foggia, Apulia. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025, with commissioning expected the following year.Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia said, “Onshore wind is a main pillar of Italy’s energy transition and RWE’s growth strategy. With this success, we are adding two more major wind farms to our already strong Italian onshore wind portfolio. We look forward to realising Venusia and Serra Palino wind farms – the next milestones in our journey to support a clean, stable and cost-effective energy future for Italy.”

RWE is a prominent player in Italy’s renewable energy sector, adopting an integrated approach that spans development, construction, operation, and marketing of wind and solar projects. The company leverages its vast experience to further its business in Italy. Currently, RWE operates 16 onshore wind farms in the country, with a combined installed capacity of 527 MW, providing green electricity to around 450,000 Italian households annually.

Additionally, RWE recently launched its first Italian solar plant, Bosco (8.3 MWac), in Sicily. Beyond the upcoming Venusia and Serra Palino wind farms, the company is also developing the 53 MW Mondonuovo wind farm in the Apulia region and its first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants: Morcone (9.8 MWac) and Acquafredda (9.3 MWac) in Campania.
