RWE, the UK’s largest power generator and global leader in renewable energy, has signed a groundbreaking 10-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) with five independent retail co-operatives: Lincolnshire Co-op, Scotmid Co-op, East of England Co-op, Southern Co-op, and Central Co-op. The deal, led by the co-operatives, will supply renewable electricity to over 400 locations across the UK, starting April 1, 2025.
The agreement will deliver up to 53 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green electricity annually, powering a variety of facilities including retail stores, funeral homes, and travel agents. The energy will be sourced from the London Array offshore wind farm in the outer Thames Estuary, operated by RWE. The deal is expected to result in significant cost savings for the co-operatives throughout its duration.
The London Array, once the world’s largest offshore wind farm, has an installed capacity of 630 megawatts, with 175 turbines. This partnership is a major step forward in the co-operative movement’s sustainability journey, reducing carbon footprints and reinforcing environmental responsibility. The agreement was facilitated by Inspired PLC, the UK’s leading energy and sustainability advisor, and legal negotiations were led by Shoosmiths LLP, with the entire deal completed in just three months—half the usual timeframe.
