Hitachi Energy has announced the signing of a long-term service agreement with Pattern Energy to support its high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology for the landmark SunZia Transmission Project, a key infrastructure initiative set to deliver clean energy across the Western United States.

The agreement covers a comprehensive suite of service solutions for the SunZia HVDC transmission link, which will connect the 3,515-megawatt SunZia Wind project in New Mexico to Arizona and other Western states. Currently under construction, the SunZia Transmission system is poised to become one of the world’s largest renewable energy transmission lines once operational in 2025.

Using Hitachi Energy’s HVDC Light® technology, the transmission link will efficiently transfer up to 3,000 MW of wind power over a distance of 885 kilometers (550 miles). This cutting-edge system will significantly enhance the integration of renewable energy into the regional power grid, supplying sustainable electricity to approximately three million Americans.

The HVDC Light system deployed will be the largest voltage source converter (VSC) installation in the United States and among the largest globally, marking a major milestone in advanced grid infrastructure.

Paul Haberlein, Vice President of Operational Excellence at Pattern Energy, added, “SunZia represents a blueprint for accelerating the transition to renewable energy. We are proud to partner with Hitachi Energy—a global technology leader—to engineer, maintain, and ensure the continued operation of the HVDC converter stations once they come online.”

The service scope includes scheduled maintenance, cyber and digital services, on-site engineering, and life cycle assessments of the HVDC Light stations. Hitachi Energy’s EnCompass™ offering is designed to provide end-to-end support throughout the asset lifecycle, enabling resilient, long-term operations.

With over 70 years of HVDC expertise, Hitachi Energy has delivered more than half of the world’s HVDC projects and holds the largest installed base of HVDC systems globally. The company’s extensive experience positions it as a key enabler of the global energy transition, helping utilities and developers achieve net-zero targets through reliable and innovative energy solutions.
