ScottishPower Energy Networks, Iberdrola’s UK distribution arm, and National Grid Electricity Transmission have reached a key milestone in the Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) project by selecting Siemens Energy as the preferred bidder to deliver two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations.

EGL4 will be a 2 GW subsea electricity link stretching 530 km between Fife, Scotland, and West Norfolk, England. Designed to carry clean, domestically produced energy, the link will help address transmission constraints between Scotland’s abundant renewable generation and high-demand areas further south. By enabling long-distance, bidirectional power transfer, EGL4 will bolster the UK’s energy security, reduce reliance on costly fossil fuel imports, and support lower consumer bills.

Following the completion of its second public consultation phase, EGL4 is moving toward final development. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2029, with operations expected to start in 2033.
