Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), a country rich in wind resources and increasingly committed to environmental protection, has become a focal point for China’s renewable energy investments in Europe. Two flagship projects—the 84 MW Ivovik wind farm and the Ulog hydropower plant in the Neretva River Valley—are under construction by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA). With a reported localization rate of 90 percent, they mark an important milestone for Chinese-built energy infrastructure in Eastern Europe and demonstrate efforts to align Chinese and European technical standards in pursuit of global climate goals.

The Ivovik wind farm is especially notable as BiH’s first renewable project developed under a foreign concession and the country’s first initiative led by a Chinese company. Once connected to the national grid, it will become BiH’s largest renewable facility, expected to generate 259 million kWh annually—enough to displace around 240,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Supporters highlight its dual role in accelerating BiH’s energy transition while delivering environmental and economic benefits.

In Kalinovik, Republika Srpska, the Ulog hydropower plant represents both the first hydro project in BiH developed by a Chinese company and POWERCHINA’s first EPC hydropower venture in Europe. Once operational, it will enhance regional power supply, provide zero-emissions generation, and contribute to long-term sustainability goals across Central and Eastern Europe.
