RWE, a global leader in offshore wind, marks 10 years since the official opening of the Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm, located 8 km off the East Yorkshire coast. Fully operational since 2015, the wind farm has contributed significantly to the UK’s low-carbon transition, delivering renewable electricity to homes and supporting local communities.
The facility comprises 73 turbines generating up to 219 megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 199,000 typical UK homes—over one and a half times the number of households in Hull. Humber Gateway has created long-term skilled roles within RWE and its supply chain, while driving economic investment in Humber-based communities. The wind farm was inaugurated on 30 September 2015 by Andrea Leadsom MP, then Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, representing a £700 million investment in UK electricity infrastructure.
Located north of the River Humber’s mouth, the project is owned 51% by RWE and 49% by Greencoat.
Thomas Michel, COO, RWE Offshore Wind, said, “Celebrating a decade of operations at RWE’s Humber Gateway is a testament to our dedicated teams, technical excellence, and strong partnerships. We are proud to contribute to our neighbouring communities through significant investment, job creation, and support for local education. This milestone highlights our achievements and our commitment to a sustainable future for the Humber region.”
