Iberdrola, through its UK subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables, has successfully completed the installation of the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) marine converter station at the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm, located approximately 69 kilometres off the coast of Suffolk in the North Sea.
Representing an investment of €5 billion, East Anglia Three is the first Iberdrola Group offshore wind project to incorporate HVDC technology, the most efficient solution for transmitting electricity over long distances.
The offshore converter station is a critical component of East Anglia Three, Iberdrola’s largest offshore wind farm to date and one of the largest in the world. It will convert the electricity generated by the site’s 95 turbines from high-voltage alternating current to direct current. With a capacity of 1,400 megawatts, the wind farm is expected to begin operation by the end of 2026, generating enough renewable electricity to power more than 2.4 million homes in the United Kingdom.
