Global clean energy developer TagEnergy has entered the UK wind market with the acquisition of four mid-stage onshore wind farm projects in Scotland, marking a significant expansion of its multi-technology portfolio.
The company has purchased 100% ownership of the Cairnmore Hill, Glenburnie, Sclenteuch, and Torfichen wind farms from independent renewable energy company RES, which will continue to provide select development services.
TagEnergy, already a notable Independent Power Producer (IPP) in the UK with 320 MW of operational battery energy storage systems (BESS) across six grid-connected sites, has now expanded its development pipeline to more than 1.5 GW. The addition of Scottish wind assets comes at a crucial time as the UK seeks to accelerate progress towards its net-zero targets, including the government’s Clean Power Action Plan goal to double onshore wind capacity by 2030.
Chief Executive Officer Franck Woitiez said the acquisition marks a major milestone in the company’s UK growth strategy. “This is a monumental step in TagEnergy’s UK journey as we become a true multi-technology IPP with generation and storage technologies driving the country’s energy transition,” he said. He added that onshore wind remains one of the fastest and most cost-effective renewable technologies to deploy, with Scotland offering some of the strongest resources in the UK.
TagEnergy highlighted its global experience in large-scale wind development, including the Golden Plains Wind Farm—the largest onshore wind project under construction in the southern hemisphere and already Australia’s highest-generating wind site.
RES UK & Ireland Managing Director Lucy Whitford noted that the acquisition builds on the long-standing partnership between the two companies. “Tag acquired its now operational Lakeside and Roaring Hill BESS projects from RES at development stage, with RES appointed as asset manager. We’re delighted to continue our relationship and look forward to supporting these four wind farms through to delivery,” she said.
Consulting firms Alvarez & Marsal, Blake Clough, Natural Power, and law firm Watson Farley Williams advised TagEnergy during the transaction.
The four wind farms represent a proposed combined capacity of 270 MW and are located at:
-Cairnmore Hill, near Thurso in Caithness
-Torfichen, near Torfichen Hill in Midlothian
-Sclenteuch, near Patna in East Ayrshire
-Glenburnie, near Lauder in the Scottish Borders
