Senvion, a prominent wind turbine OEM in India, has announced a strategic collaboration with German-based Voodin Blade Technology GmbH to develop high-performance wooden wind turbine blades for Senvion’s 4.2 MW wind turbine platform. The partnership marks a significant step toward sustainable wind energy solutions.

The collaboration will begin with a feasibility study to assess the technical, economic, and environmental potential of using wooden turbine blades. This will be followed by the installation and testing of prototype blades. Voodin Blade Technology’s success in deploying prototype wooden blades in Germany in 2024 provides a strong foundation for this new venture, which aims to revolutionize the wind energy industry with innovative and sustainable materials.

Voodin Blade Technology GmbH specializes in creating sustainable wood-based turbine blades using Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), a renewable and recyclable material. This development addresses one of the wind industry’s major challenges—blade recyclability—by integrating engineered wood into turbine blade production.

In addition to sustainability, Voodin’s LVL production technology eliminates the need for moulds, significantly reducing manufacturing energy consumption. The flexible, mould-independent approach also ensures consistent quality through advanced automation, allowing for scalable production while reducing capital expenditure (CAPEX) compared to traditional blade production methods.

Amit Kansal, CEO & Managing Director of Senvion India, commented on the collaboration: “The 4.2M160 exemplifies our commitment to innovation in wind energy technology. We believe Voodin’s technology offers great potential in terms of sustainability and flexibility, enhancing performance and reliability in challenging environments.”

Tom Siekmann, CEO of Voodin Blade Technology GmbH, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “This collaboration allows us to scale our wooden blade technology and advance our mission to create a more sustainable and recyclable future for the wind energy industry. Wooden wind turbine blades represent a technological leap toward a more sustainable energy ecosystem.”

Dr. PKC Bose, Co-Founder & Managing Director of ENREGO Energy GmbH, partners of Voodin Blade Technology, stated: “The strategic alliance between Senvion India and Voodin Blades will transform wind turbine blade production, helping pave the way toward a sustainable future in the industry.”

This collaboration is set to accelerate the adoption of sustainable materials in wind energy production, providing a crucial step toward enhancing the industry’s environmental footprint and supporting long-term energy security.
