Mainstream Renewable Power, the worldwide wind and solar firm, and Actis, a major global investor in sustainable infrastructure, have finalised the sale of 100% of the Lekela platform to Infinity Power, a joint venture between Egypt’s Infinity and the UAE’s Masdar.

The deal yields net proceeds to Mainstream of about US$90 million, subject to certain closing adjustments, with an enterprise value of roughly US$1.5 billion.

Lekela was founded in 2015 as part of a joint venture between Actis (60% ownership) and a Mainstream-led consortium called Mainstream Renewable Power Africa Holdings (MRPAH) (40% ownership) to provide sustainable, dependable electricity across Africa.

Since then, Lekela has grown to become Africa’s largest pure-play renewable energy IPP, with over 1 GW of fully operational wind assets, including five operational wind farms in South Africa (624MW), one operational wind farm in Egypt (252MW), one operational wind farm in Senegal (159MW), and development opportunities in Ghana, Senegal, and Egypt.

The withdrawal marks the successful conclusion of Actis and Mainstream’s partnership plan for Lekela, which was based on a holistic value development approach. Lekela has established the highest international standards in health, safety, and environmental protection with the help of Actis and Mainstream’s devoted sustainability specialists.

Lekela has also shown a great commitment to community development by maintaining a community investment strategy that finances economic, educational, and environmental activities. Throughout its existence, Lekela has also demonstrated a strong dedication to local development, maintaining a community investment plan that funds entrepreneurship, education, and environmental preservation efforts. Actis and Mainstream have delivered on their stringent sustainable development standards throughout the development, building, and operations process, led by close involvement with local communities.

With this transaction, we have delivered on the promise made during COP27 of being the fastest-growing renewable energy company in Africa.”

“We continue to drive efforts that reduce carbon emissions, increase renewable energy sources, and develop efficient energy solutions for the entire region, in order to achieve our vision of providing clean, reliable and affordable electricity access to people in under-served communities across Africa.”
