The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, alongside key partners, has solidified its commitment to Kazakhstan’s clean energy landscape by signing an Investment Agreement for a major 1GW wind farm project. The signing took place at COP29, hosted in Baku, and was attended by prominent figures including H.E. Nurlan Baibazarov, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.
The project marks Masdar’s first venture into Kazakhstan, bringing with it a 600-megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and solidifying Kazakhstan’s position as Central Asia’s largest economy. Set in the Jambyl region, the 1GW wind farm will help the country meet its renewable energy goals, aiming to generate clean energy for 300,000 homes and eliminate 2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year upon completion. The wind farm project is co-developed with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund, with Masdar as the lead developer.
Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, H.E. Almassadam Satkaliyev, emphasized the project’s significance in driving the country’s renewable energy ambitions: “This wind farm exemplifies our dedication to achieving a net-zero target by 2060. Partnering with Masdar and the UAE strengthens our commitment to a greener future,” he said.
UAE Energy Minister H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei highlighted the project as a testament to the strong UAE-Kazakhstan partnership in the clean energy sector. “Today’s agreement reflects our shared vision and the UAE’s goal of tripling global renewable energy by 2030,” said Al Mazrouei.
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, noted the strategic impact of the collaboration. “This wind farm, among the largest in Central Asia, not only supports Kazakhstan’s net-zero goals but also advances the UAE’s global mandate to accelerate renewable energy and efficiency targets,” Dr. Al Jaber commented.
Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, expressed confidence in the project’s positive impact, citing Masdar’s track record in large-scale renewables. “We’re excited to contribute to Kazakhstan’s energy transformation with our expertise and our partnership with W Solar and Qazaq Green Power,” Al Ramahi said.
The Jambyl wind project aligns with Kazakhstan’s targets to increase renewables to 15 percent of its energy mix by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. This development builds on commitments made by the UAE and Kazakhstan at COP28, aimed at fostering Kazakhstan’s renewable energy capacity.
Since 2006, Masdar has led the UAE’s global sustainability initiatives, now operating in over 40 countries. By 2030, Masdar aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100GW and position itself as a leader in green hydrogen production, reinforcing its dedication to climate action worldwide.
