Following the conclusion of COP29, wind industry leaders and government energy officials are meeting in Incheon, South Korea, for the launch of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC)’s flagship APAC Wind Energy Summit. The event, running from November 26-28, 2024, is set to highlight South Korea’s potential as a key player in the rapidly growing wind energy sector in the Asia-Pacific region.
The second edition of the Summit is being held in collaboration with the Korea Wind Energy Industry Association (KWEIA) and aims to enhance the local wind energy industry. South Korea is poised to play a leading role in the region’s wind energy expansion, particularly as it seeks to meet its ambitious goal of installing 14.3 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
This year’s event has garnered support from major wind energy companies including Corio, Equinor, and Vestas, who are serving as official Event Ambassadors. These global leaders have been instrumental in shaping the Summit’s program.
Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, emphasized the importance of South Korea’s involvement, stating, “With H.E. Won-shik Woo, a key advocate for South Korea’s energy transition, as the Guest of Honour, the Summit reflects the nation’s commitment to wind power as a central part of its decarbonisation strategy.” He further underscored the urgency of action in the Asia-Pacific region, calling it essential to meeting global renewable energy targets.
Kim Hyung-geun, President of the Korea Wind Industry Association, welcomed high-level government officials from 12 countries, noting, “This Summit provides an important platform to showcase Korea’s wind industry and explore global collaborations to scale up the sector.”
The World Bank Group’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP) is a key partner for the Summit, bringing government delegations from India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. These delegations will participate in forums and discussions aimed at fostering regional collaboration to unlock the Asia-Pacific region’s wind energy potential.
Additionally, the GWEC will launch its inaugural APAC Clean Energy Finance Summit on Day 2 of the event. Co-partnered with the Asian Development Bank and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), this half-day track will focus on increasing investment in renewable energy projects in the region, aiming to improve financing conditions and boost the region’s energy transition.
The Summit serves as a key platform for discussing the strategies and investments needed to achieve the global goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. It brings together experts from across the renewable energy, finance, and project development sectors to enhance project investability and encourage sustainable financing in the Asia-Pacific region.
The event will run through November 28, 2024, at the Songdo ConvensiA in Incheon.
