SK E&S announced the commencement of trial operations for the Jeonnam 1 Offshore Wind Farm, marking South Korea’s first privately led offshore wind project. The 96-megawatt (MW) wind farm, located in the public waters northwest of Jaeun Island in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province, is a significant milestone for the country’s renewable energy sector.

The project is expected to begin commercial operations by March 2025. In 2023, the farm made history as the first private offshore wind initiative in South Korea to secure funding based solely on the project’s creditworthiness.

To mark the occasion, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo visited the site to oversee the trial operations. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with SK E&S President Choo Hyung-wook and South Jeolla Governor Kim Yung-rok. Prime Minister Han emphasized the importance of offshore wind energy in strengthening South Korea’s energy security and reaffirmed South Jeolla’s emerging leadership in the renewable energy sector.

The project is also seen as a stepping stone towards the creation of the world’s largest offshore wind farm in the area.
