ACCIONA Energía has announced the start of commercial operations at the Forty Mile Wind Farm in Alberta, Canada. With a total capacity of 280 megawatts (MW), it ranks among the ten largest wind farms in the country and represents the largest facility the company has built in North America to date.
The wind farm features 49 Nordex turbines, each with a 5.7 MW capacity and a tower height of 108 meters. The project is expected to offset approximately 600,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually—comparable to planting 25 million trees.
In addition to its environmental impact, the Forty Mile Wind Farm delivers significant economic benefits to the surrounding communities. The project generated more than 200 jobs during peak construction and will sustain 25 full-time positions for ongoing operations and maintenance.
Over its lifetime, the facility is projected to contribute more than CAD $133 million (€85 million) in property tax revenues, supporting local infrastructure and services. The project also actively contributes to community development through financial support to local nonprofits, including the Bow Island Food Bank, Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub, and the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.
