AMEA Power, one of Africa’s fastest-growing renewable energy companies, has entered the second phase of the Agadir desalination project in Morocco, which will be powered by the company’s 150 MW wind project in Laayoune. Once operational, it will be AMEA Power’s first water desalination plant in North Africa.
The expansion will boost the plant’s total capacity to 400,000 m³ per day, making it one of Africa’s largest desalination facilities. While the first phase was developed and is currently owned by Spanish water and energy management leader Cox, the second phase will be delivered through a joint venture in which AMEA Power will supply renewable energy from its Laayoune wind farm. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, said: “Our entry into the second phase of the Agadir desalination project in Morocco, under the Water Alliance Ventures platform, reflects AMEA Power’s ambition to address both water and energy challenges through integrated solutions. This project is not only our first entry into the water sector in North Africa – it is also a powerful example of what long-term partnerships can achieve for sustainable development across the region”.
This marks the first project under the strategic joint venture agreement signed between AMEA Power and Cox in May 2025, aimed at delivering integrated infrastructure where water and energy solutions are closely linked.
The combined investment for the desalination expansion and associated wind farm is expected to exceed €250 million. The expanded facility is slated to be operational by the end of 2026, with the wind farm set to come online in 2027.
