The offshore wind energy sector is set for a major transformation with the launch of WinDTwin, a groundbreaking European-funded project aimed at revolutionizing wind power production forecasting and management. Backed by a €6 million grant, this three-year initiative brings together a diverse consortium of 13 entities from 7 countries, united in their mission to create a highly accurate and dynamic digital twin (DT) for offshore wind farms.
As global demand for renewable energy surges, the expansion of both onshore and offshore wind farms becomes essential. Current wind farms underscore the importance of strategic micrositing of turbines and optimal interconnection. However, integrating wind farms into larger clusters and virtual power plants poses challenges, such as potential long-distance negative interactions that can undermine efficiency gains.
To tackle these challenges, WinDTwin will develop a sophisticated digital twin platform. This platform aims to revolutionize the industry by providing precise predictions of power production and energy demand. It will serve as a central hub for decision-makers, offering access to high-quality resources, models, scenarios, and visualizations, enabling more informed and strategic management of offshore wind energy.
