A new study commissioned by RWE highlights the profound socio-economic benefits of the Sofia offshore wind farm, a flagship renewable energy project located 195 kilometers off England’s North East coast on Dogger Bank. With a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts (GW), Sofia is set to become one of the UK’s largest renewable energy assets, capable of powering 1.2 million households while fostering economic and community growth.

According to a Wavehill Social and Economic Research study, the project has made significant contributions to local and national economies. Sofia’s development and construction phases are anticipated to boost the UK economy by £760 million in GVA, creating 8,810 full-time jobs. Regionally, this includes 1,600 FTE person-years in Yorkshire and Humber and 490 in the North East. Construction will generate a maximum of 2,000 jobs, both direct and indirect, while the project will provide over 80 high-skilled, long-term roles for its 25+ years of operation.

Tom Glover, UK Country Chair, RWE: “Offshore wind is not just about delivering clean power—it’s about creating a ripple effect of positive change. The Sofia Offshore Wind Farm project demonstrates how renewable energy can boost economic growth, support the supply chain, and bring lasting benefits to local communities. By investing in skills, infrastructure, and community initiatives, we are ensuring that offshore wind delivers for the UK both today and in the future.”

Sofia is leaving a lasting legacy by nurturing skills for the broader renewable energy industry. Its outreach initiatives have engaged over 12,700 students from primary schools to universities, promoting STEM career pathways. The Champions for Wind program empowers local educators to inspire future generations, while sponsorships like the Energy Central Learning Hub in Blyth and an apprenticeship program are developing the next wave of wind turbine technicians and engineers.

The project also invests in community-driven initiatives through the Sofia Construction Community Fund, supporting 23 local charities and addressing issues such as social isolation, poverty, and sustainability.
