RWE and TotalEnergies have chosen the Port of Eemshaven, in Groningen, as the hub for turbine assembly and construction for their OranjeWind offshore wind project in the Dutch North Sea. A partnership agreement with Buss Terminal Eemshaven has been signed to facilitate key logistics and pre-assembly operations.
Construction at the offshore site will begin in early 2026, with turbine installation set for 2027 and full commissioning by the end of that year. Buss Terminal Eemshaven will handle the offloading, storage, and pre-assembly of turbine components and inter-array cabling, while monopile foundations will be transported directly from Sif’s Rotterdam facility to the offshore site, located approximately 278 km from Eemshaven.
Covering 35–40 hectares, the terminal will also support RWE’s Nordseecluster B project, showcasing its strategic role in multiple offshore wind initiatives. OranjeWind will feature 53 Vestas 15 MW turbines, generating approximately 3 TWh annually—enough to power over 1 million Dutch homes.
Key contributors include Sif for monopiles, TKF for inter-array cables, Jan De Nul Group for transportation and installation of foundations and turbines, and DEME for cable installation and secondary steel components. TenneT will oversee the grid connection, linking the offshore substation to onshore infrastructure.
Vestas will service the turbines under a five-year agreement, followed by long-term operational support, ensuring sustained green energy production for the Netherlands. Thomas Michel, Chief Operating Officer of RWE Offshore Wind, said, “The choice of construction port is crucial for any offshore wind project. Buss Terminal Eemshaven, with its marshalling and construction facilities, has capabilities that are geared towards the efficient realisation of our OranjeWind project. For this reason, we have decided to use the Buss Terminal for OranjeWind while it’s simultaneously supporting our German Nordseecluster and Danish Thor projects.”
Marc Wegman, Managing Director of Buss Terminal Eemshaven, added, “We are pleased to partner with RWE and TotalEnergies and serve as the base for the construction of another large offshore wind project. With our highly trained and motivated team, completing the project safely and on time is our top priority. This project will further strengthen Buss Ports’ position as a leading harbour logistics partner for offshore wind projects.”
