Iberdrola has awarded EnergyLoop the contract to recycle wind turbine blades and manage component waste for the Isabela and Molar de Molinar wind farms, marking its first repowering project in Spain. A total of 139 wind turbines, including 417 blades weighing over 800 tons, will be dismantled as part of the initiative. As part of its Circular Economy Plan, Iberdrola aims to recycle 50% of dismantled wind turbine blades and solar panels by 2025, progressing to 100% by 2030. This commitment aligns with the company’s resource efficiency and sustainability goals, addressing resource scarcity, reducing environmental impact, and fostering value creation and employment.
EnergyLoop, established in 2022, is a collaboration between Iberdrola Ventures Perseo and FCC Ámbito. The partnership focuses on industrial-scale recycling of wind turbine blades in Spain and Portugal through a pioneering facility. Located in Navarra, EnergyLoop’s recycling plant is set to commence operations in early 2025. In the meantime, all necessary infrastructure and permits are in place to receive and process blades.
