RWE has secured pre-qualification from transmission system operator TenneT to provide a 60 MW secondary reserve, also known as automatic frequency restoration reserve, via its Amrumbank West offshore wind farm. This reserve plays a critical role in maintaining the grid’s stable frequency of 50 Hertz, preventing disruptions. To participate in secondary reserve auctions, the wind farm must be capable of fully reducing its output by 60 MW within five minutes.

Starting in early 2025, RWE will market this reserve through daily balancing energy auctions, making Amrumbank West not only a supplier of green electricity but also an active stabilizer of Germany’s power grid. The 302 MW wind farm, located 37 kilometers off the North Frisian island of Amrum, consists of 80 turbines. Expanding its expertise in grid balancing—previously managed through pumped storage, gas-fired plants, and batteries—RWE now extends its capabilities to wind energy. The company also plans to qualify additional wind and solar assets for balancing services, offering new revenue opportunities for renewable energy operators.
