Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy generator, has commenced construction of the 72 MW Emma Wind Project in the Piura region of northern Peru, marking the company’s first investment in wind power in the country.
The project represents a significant milestone in Statkraft’s renewable energy expansion strategy in South America and will strengthen its diversified clean energy portfolio in Peru, which already includes hydropower assets and a growing solar pipeline.
The Emma Wind Project is expected to generate approximately 325 GWh of electricity annually and achieve a capacity factor of more than 50%, positioning it among the region’s high-performing wind farms. The project will provide competitive renewable electricity to customers across the Peruvian market while supporting the country’s growing demand for clean and reliable energy.
Fernando de Lapuerta, Executive Vice President International at Statkraft, said the Emma Wind Project aligns with the company’s international growth strategy and long-term investment objectives. He noted that Peru offers abundant renewable energy resources and increasing demand for affordable, sustainable electricity, making it a strategic market for expanding Statkraft’s renewable portfolio.
The Emma project will complement Statkraft’s existing hydropower operations and its expanding solar portfolio in Peru, including the Lupi Solar Project in the Moquegua region. By integrating hydropower, solar, and wind generation, the company aims to provide reliable and cost-effective renewable energy solutions to key industries such as mining and agribusiness.
Enzo Contreras, Country Manager of Statkraft Peru, said the addition of wind energy strengthens the company’s portfolio of complementary renewable technologies, enabling it to deliver cleaner, competitive, and more reliable electricity while supporting Peru’s transition toward a diversified and sustainable energy mix.
During the construction phase, Statkraft said the Emma Wind Project will prioritise local employment and procurement from regional suppliers wherever possible, contributing to economic development in nearby communities. The company added that the project will be developed in accordance with its sustainability and human rights standards.
