A new wind farm is underway in the Rhenish lignite area, with preparations in full swing. RWE is leading the construction of six wind turbines on recultivated land at the Inden opencast mine, set to generate 34.2 MW collectively. Awarded the contract by the Federal Network Agency last December, this project marks a significant step toward renewable energy.
The wind turbines in Aldenhoven will connect to RWE Power’s transformer substation in the Inden opencast mine, channeling electricity into the grid through existing infrastructure. Expected to go live by summer 2025, these turbines will provide green electricity for approximately 24,000 households annually.
Looking ahead, RWE aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio in North Rhine-Westphalia, targeting around 1,000 MW by 2030, demonstrating a continued commitment to green energy initiatives.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said, “Aldenhoven is another example of how well the energy transition is progressing in the Rhenish lignite area. The expansion of renewables has accelerated significantly in recent years. I would like to thank the authorities, the municipality and other local stakeholders for their constructive cooperation. This is what has enabled us to start construction so quickly.”
