RWE has successfully completed a repowering project for the Lesse and Barbecke wind farms in Lower Saxony, bringing them back into full operation. The upgrade involved replacing 17 aging wind turbines, each about 20 years old, with 11 state-of-the-art turbines. The new turbines have a combined capacity of 61.8 MW, more than doubling the previous 30.6 MW, and can supply green electricity to approximately 43,500 households.

The project is expected to generate up to €280,000 annually for the town of Salzgitter and the municipalities of Lengede, Burgdorf, and Söhlde. With larger rotor diameters of around 150 meters, the new turbines capture more wind and generate power even at low wind speeds, resulting in a projected tripling of energy output.

Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia: “Fewer turbines, twice the capacity. This is the result of having successfully repowered the Lesse and Barbecke wind farms. We are particularly delighted to have finished the work sooner than planned due our dedicated on-site team and the excellent collaboration with our partner companies. This shows once again that RWE is accelerating the expansion of renewables.”
