Statkraft has approved the investment decision for its 304 MW Gran Sul Wind Project in Santa Vitória do Palmar, Rio Grande do Sul, marking another milestone in the company’s renewable energy expansion strategy in Brazil.
Located in one of southern Brazil’s strongest wind resource regions, the Gran Sul project will add new renewable energy capacity to the country’s electricity system while strengthening Statkraft’s presence across hydropower, wind, and solar power.
Construction of the wind farm is scheduled to begin in January 2027, following the completion of all required technical, environmental, and regulatory approvals.
“Brazil is an important market for Statkraft. Gran Sul fits well with our strategy to build scale in selected markets and develop a competitive renewable energy portfolio. In Brazil, we combine hydropower, wind power and solar power to deliver reliable and competitive energy solutions that support the energy transition,” said Fernando de Lapuerta, Executive Vice President International at Statkraft.
According to the company, the project aligns with its long-term strategy to expand renewable power generation in key international markets while supporting Brazil’s transition toward a cleaner and more resilient energy system.
“Gran Sul is an important step in Statkraft’s growth strategy in Brazil. The investment decision reflects our confidence in the Brazilian market and helps utilize the good wind resources in the country. The project will contribute to a more secure, competitive and sustainable power system,” said Thiago Tomazzoli, Country Manager Brazil at Statkraft.
Beyond increasing renewable energy generation, the development is expected to create regional economic value through local employment opportunities, partnerships with local suppliers, and long-term investments in Rio Grande do Sul.
Statkraft has operated in Brazil since 2008 and currently employs more than 300 people in the country. The company operates 16 hydropower plants, 33 wind farms, and 12 solar power plants that are operational or under construction, with a combined installed capacity exceeding 2.4 GW.
Following its acquisition of Enerfin in 2023, Statkraft has become one of Brazil’s ten largest wind power producers. Brazil is now the company’s second-largest power generation market after Norway, producing approximately 5.9 TWh of electricity annually.
