K2 Management (K2M), a leading renewable energy engineering and project management consultancy has been selected for design and owner’s engineer services at Taean Wind Power’s 504MW offshore wind farm in South Korea.
With substantial climatological and topographical constraints limiting options for the development of onshore wind and solar in South Korea, offshore wind presents a clear route for the country to reduce its dependency on imported fossil fuels. As such, the progression of offshore wind projects is key to seeing the country meet its decarbonisation targets as outlined by President Moon Jae-in’s Renewable Energy 2030 Implementation Plan.
Following the successful delivery of a preliminary feasibility study and site screening in the initial stages of the development, K2M, in partnership with Dohwa Engineering (Dohwa), will now deliver on the next stage of the project. This will include design of the turbine foundations, inter-array, export cables, and offshore substation. K2M and Dohwa will also carry out the energy yield assessment and manage the invitation to tender and permitting processes, with the goal of streamlining the project and ensuring it remains on schedule.
Sung-Won Jung, Country Director at K2 Management Korea said: “Offshore wind represents a significant opportunity for South Korea to meet its clean energy targets and provide sustainable, green jobs for local people. We are proud to have been selected as owner’s engineer for this project and are looking forward to supporting the project’s realisation.”
Byeong-Won Chu, Taean Wind Power, said: “We were pleased to see that the feasibility study led by K2M and Dohwa demonstrated the enormous potential of the project, and can now confirm that the design and permitting process is underway. We look forward to extending our relationship to cover project design and owner’s engineer services.”
Chan Seong Park, General Director, Sung-Wook Park, Managing Director and Gyu Young Kang, Project Manager in Dohwa said: “K2 Management supported comprehensive technical aspects during the preliminary feasibility study phase. The collaboration of technical expertise between K2 Management and Dohwa has been central to the successful progression of Taean Offshore Wind Farm to date. Dohwa and K2 Management have worked together with stakeholders since project conception and are delighted to be asked to continue to collaborate as the project moves into the next stage.”
Construction of Taean Offshore Wind Farm is scheduled to begin in July 2023, with a completion date of 2026.
