The renewables industry must grow at a significantly faster rate in the next decade to achieve net-zero compatibility when expanding sustainable energy. Vestas, a global leader of sustainable energy solutions, is committed to supporting this growth. We drive industry maturity and invest in solutions that allow for more scale. Modular product development is key to industry scalability. We are now introducing the V172-7.2 MW. This will expand the EnVentus platform, offer enhanced performance in low-to-medium wind conditions, and also enhance the modular product development. We are also changing the nameplate for the medium-to high wind EnVentus variant V162-6.8MW to a 7.2 MW.

In low wind conditions, the V172-7.2MW produces a 12 percent higher annual energy production (AEP), than the V162-6.2MW variant. This new variant offers flexible power ratings of 6.8 MW, 6.5 MW, and 7.2 MW. It also has expanded site application for all conditions with solutions for cold and an optional CoolerTop that can be used in hot climates.

Vestas’ technological ambitions are centered on enabling maturity and scaling growth. The V172-7.2MW will open up new opportunities for wind energy to grow in scale. It will make it easier and more efficient to design and produce high quality sustainable energy solutions. The V172-7.2MW is a demonstration of how modular product development can allow for customisable solutions that are suited to every environment. It is also a sign for how we can support customers as a long term partner in the energy transformation. We are able to meet their future needs now and into the future,” says Anders Nielsen Vestas Chief Technology Officer.

Vestas’ modularised nacelle architecture for the V172-7.2MW will be used. The nacelle structure has been divided into compartments which are dimensioned to conform to industry standards for road and rail transport. This allows for greater flexibility and efficiency over the life of the turbine’s operation. This variant will allow Vestas to align their offshore and onshore platforms more closely, since both Vestas V172-7.2MW and V162-7.2MW share the modularised architecture of the nacelle with Vestas offshore V236-15.0MW.

The EnVentus platform, the next generation Vestas technology, builds on and leverages proven technology from the 2MW, 4MW, and 9MW platforms and allows for more efficient customisation through advanced modularity. EnVentus now offers four wind turbine options. Vestas has received orders for more that 6 GW in 14 markets across four continents since the EnVentus platform was launched in 2019.
