Iberdrola, through its UK subsidiary ScottishPower, has successfully completed one of the largest peatland restoration projects ever authorized in the country. After more than 15 years of effort, the company’s Environment team has restored 1,113 hectares of vital wetlands around the Whitelee wind farm.

With an investment exceeding 1.63 million euros, this project marks a significant step forward in habitat conservation and climate change mitigation. Overall, Iberdrola has invested more than 4.5 million euros in peatland restoration across its operational areas.

Peatlands are crucial ecosystems formed by water-saturated organic matter, mainly moss. When healthy, they store vast amounts of carbon, helping to regulate the climate. However, degraded peatlands release greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. In Scotland, such degraded areas account for around 15% of the nation’s emissions.
