The Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) held its Annual General Meeting at the Chennai Trade Centre, where a new Executive Committee was unanimously elected. Mr. Girish Tanti, Vice Chairman and founding member of Suzlon Energy, has been appointed as Chairman, alongside Dr. Saravanan Manickam, Country Head (VP India) at Nordex, who will serve as Vice Chairman-cum-Secretary. Mr. K Bharathy, CEO of Windar Renewable Energy, takes on the role of Treasurer.
Mr. Tanti is a globally recognized climate action leader, holding multiple significant positions, including Vice Chairman of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Chairman of GWEC’s Global Supply Chain Forum, and Co-Chair of CII’s National Committee on Renewable Energy.
The newly appointed Executive Committee members include:
- Mr. RPV Prasad, Managing Director – India at Envision Energy
- Mr. Amit Kansal, CEO and Managing Director at Senvion
- Mr. Navin Dewaji, Head of Onshore AP India at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE)
- Mr. Siva Murali, General Manager – Sales and Marketing at ZF Wind Power
- Dr. Venkataraman Balakrishnan, President of Aditya Birla Advanced Materials
- Mr. Pandu Chillakuru, Whole Time Director at Flender
In his inaugural speech, Mr. Tanti emphasized the urgent need to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 to meet the climate goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. He highlighted India’s ambitious target of sourcing 50% of its energy from renewables, with wind power contributing 100 GW by 2030. This goal necessitates an increase of 53 GW from the current capacity of 47 GW.
“Fortunately, India’s wind sector has achieved ‘Atmanirbhar’ status with a robust supply chain and a local ecosystem capable of manufacturing 17 GW of wind turbines annually,” Mr. Tanti stated. He underscored the importance of strengthening this manufacturing ecosystem to support India’s net-zero ambitions and establish the country as a global supply chain hub. He called for sustained government support through policies, incentives, and initiatives to unlock the sector’s full potential.
The AGM coincided with Windergy India 2024, the 6th International Trade Fair & Conference, which received support from the Union Ministry of Power, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), and NITI Aayog, and was recognized under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Dignitaries in attendance included Shri Sudeep Jain (IAS, Additional Secretary, MNRE), Shri Lalit Bohra (IRTS, Joint Secretary, MNRE), and Dr. Aneesh Sekhar (IAS, Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd.). The Chief Guest at the Valedictory Session was Shri Prakash Chand Garg, Director & COO of CTUIL.
