RWE has commissioned its first wind farm in Rhineland-Palatinate — the Kail Wind Farm, located on a high plateau near the Moselle River, approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Koblenz. With a total installed capacity of 12.9 megawatts (MW), the three-turbine facility was completed within just 12 months and will generate enough renewable electricity to power around 7,500 households annually.
RWE secured the project during the February 2024 onshore wind auction. The construction phase was carried out with a strong focus on environmental protection and resource efficiency. Materials used for crane platforms and access roads were repurposed within the project, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said, “Thank you very much to the companies involved, the local authorities, the district of Cochem-Zell and the farmers who made their land available, as well as the dedicated RWE team. Their excellent cooperation enabled us to complete our first wind farm in the Rhineland-Palatinate region quickly. This approach not only supports our commitment to the expansion of renewables but also creates significant added value for the region. For every kilowatt hour of energy generated, we contribute 0.2 cents to the neighbouring communities. They can expect an annual income of up to €60,000.”
