RWE has reached the halfway point in the construction of its 1.1 GW Thor Offshore Wind Farm, successfully installing 36 of the project’s 72 wind turbines off the west coast of Jutland, Denmark. The milestone marks significant progress toward completing what will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm.
The project utilizes Siemens Gamesa’s 15 MW offshore wind turbines, each standing approximately 148 metres above sea level with 115-metre-long rotor blades. Once completed, the wind farm will have a total installed capacity of 1.1 GW.
According to RWE, turbine installation activities are being carried out from the Port of Esbjerg using the Fred. Olsen Windcarrier installation vessel Brave Tern. The remaining 36 turbines are scheduled for installation by the end of 2026, with testing and full commercial commissioning expected by spring 2027.
Upon completion, the Thor Offshore Wind Farm is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to meet the annual power demand of more than one million Danish households.
Commenting on the milestone, Tobias Keitel, Chief Technology Officer, RWE Offshore Wind, said the project remains on schedule despite construction challenges and acknowledged the efforts of the project team and supply chain partners. He added that the company’s focus is now on completing construction and achieving full commercial operation in 2027.
The project also incorporates several sustainability innovations. RWE stated that 36 wind turbines will be installed using carbon-reduced steel towers supplied by Siemens Gamesa, making Thor the world’s first offshore wind farm to adopt the technology at this scale. Additionally, 40 turbines will be equipped with a total of 120 recyclable rotor blades, supporting improved lifecycle sustainability for offshore wind infrastructure.
The Thor Offshore Wind Farm is being jointly developed by RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49%. RWE is responsible for the construction, operation, and lifecycle management of the offshore wind project.
