ACCIONA Energía Boosts Chile’s Grid Transmission Capacity By 60% Using AI

ACCIONA Energía has completed an artificial intelligence-based grid digitalization project in Chile that increases electricity transmission capacity by 60% in the southern part of the National Electric System. The project, known as the Transfer Control Automation System, is designed to improve the use of existing transmission infrastructure and support the integration of additional renewable energy.

The system enables the grid to accommodate an estimated 239 GWh of additional wind power generation annually. This amount of clean electricity is equivalent to the yearly consumption of approximately 100,000 households. By increasing the amount of renewable power that can be transmitted through existing lines, the project can reduce the need for electricity from thermal power plants and help lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The technology uses advanced digital, communications, and automation solutions to optimize high-voltage transmission corridors in Chile’s Araucanía and Biobío regions. The system specifically improves transmission capacity along the Mulchén–Santa Clara and Santa Clara–Charrúa corridors, helping address grid constraints that can limit renewable energy generation.

The project involved cooperation among several companies and institutions across Chile’s electricity sector. Grid operators Transelec, Ferrovial, SAESA, CELEO, and Transmisora Sur Andes participated in the initiative, along with renewable energy developers Enel Green Power and WPD. Before implementation, the system underwent extensive testing and validation through computer simulations conducted by the University of Santiago, Chile, in coordination with the National Electric Coordinator.

ACCIONA Energía said the project demonstrates how digital technologies and artificial intelligence can improve the efficiency and flexibility of existing power networks. Instead of relying only on new transmission construction, advanced control systems can help unlock additional capacity from infrastructure already in operation.

The project also adds to ACCIONA’s experience in electricity transmission and smart grid infrastructure. The company has more than two decades of experience designing, financing, constructing, and operating substations and transmission lines. It has delivered more than 70 power grid projects across markets including Spain, Mexico, Kenya, Peru, and Australia.

The Transfer Control Automation System highlights the growing role of digitalization in supporting renewable energy integration. By enabling more wind power to reach consumers through existing infrastructure, the project provides a scalable approach to improving grid capacity, reducing emissions, and supporting Chile’s energy transition.
