Atlas Renewable Energy (Atlas), has reached a major milestone by developing its first wind power plant with a long-term power purchasing agreement (PPA), with Enel Generacion Chile S.A for 1.3GWh/year. The portfolio includes three wind projects that total 417 MW in Chile. This helps accelerate the country’s clean energy transition.
Alfredo Solar, General Manager of Atlas Renewable Energy Chile stated that “our first wind energy project confirms our position as a company capable in developing renewable technologies and adapting for the needs of customers across multiple markets around the globe.”
Enel Generacion Chile Trading and Commercialization manager, Alfredo Hott said Enel adds wind power to its renewable energy portfolio to provide customers with clean and competitive energy. This is in keeping with the company’s contribution to the country’s energy transformation.
Atlas’ Alpaca Portfolio is made up of three wind farms that will be in operation by 2025. They will be in the Araucania and Los Lagos regions of Chile.
“We are proud to expand our work in the south of the country. Atlas already has a presence at Antofagasta and Atacama. These projects will allow us to expand into Chile’s southern region and establish a presence within six regions,” Solar stated.
Atlas has established itself as the preferred partner of large-scale Latin American utilities to obtain clean, renewable energy. Atlas previously signed a similar PPA to Engie for the development of Sol del Desierto in Chile’s Atacama desert. It recently began operation.
1.3GWh/yr equals powering 628,512 homes in Chile, avoiding 671.488 tons carbon pollution, and equivalent to getting rid about 145.975 cars off the streets of Santiago.
Atlas will be able to develop local social programs. This will allow for the creation of local social programs and promote the development and inclusion of local labor force. Similar programs were also developed during Sol del Desierto’s construction. One of those projects’ initiatives was the “We Are Part of the Same Energy” program. This provided training to 66 local women to enable them to apply for skilled positions during construction and in other local jobs.
