Ørsted Inaugurates Largest Offshore Wind O&M Hub in Taiwan

Orsted, a global offshore wind leader, recently opened the Orsted Taiwan Offshore Wind Farms Operations and Maintenance Hub. The O&M hub, located at the Port of Taichung is the first facility of its kind in Asia-Pacific. It also has the largest size and highest offshore service capacity. It was built to service four Greater Changhua offshore wind farm with a combined capacity of approximately 2.4 GW.

The inauguration ceremony featured many distinguished guests, including Shen Jong-chin, Vice Premier; Hung Sun-han, Legislator, Chen Su-yueh, Legislator; Yan Li-min, the Deputy Speaker at Taichung City Council, Chen Rong-cong, President Taichung Port, Taiwan International Ports Corporation, Ltd., as well as foreign representatives such as Mads Nipper, CEO and Group President of Orsted, as well as Per Mejnert Kristensen, the new President of Orsted Asia-Pacific.

Orsted’s industry-leading business model of build-to-operate began O&M deployment in 2018. It also had a plan to set up full-scale operations. This is a new industrial practice in Taiwan. Orsted’s O&M expertise was brought to Taiwan through the creation of a local O&M team made up of operations professionals and technicians, as well as the launch and operation of a customized service vessel (SOV) and investment in the O&M hub. Orsted’s willingness and commitment to deliver offshore wind farms in Taiwan with high performance, quality, reliability, and affordability are evident in these efforts and the significant investment made in the O&M setup.

Mads Nipper is the Group President and CEO at Orsted. He says that Taiwan is our first market in Asia-Pacific, and also home to our regional headquarters. Through the 1.82 GW of capacity we have been awarded, and the more than 5.6GW new projects that are in the pipeline, Orsted is contributing significantly to Taiwan’s energy transition. Our O&M hub was inaugurated. This is the largest investment we have made in this market.

The O&M portfolio of Orsted includes global standards for the design and construction of the hub. This allows the O&M team to manage the safety aspects and oversee all operations at offshore wind farms. The facility also uses locally produced, energy-saving, and sustainable materials to help Orsted achieve its 2025 goal of carbon neutrality. O&M hub has met the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s gold-rating certification criteria.

Orsted established a learning center at the O&M hub to promote knowledge sharing and education in green energy.
