Copenhagen Energy Islands has leveraged Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ extensive expertise in offshore wind to globally develop energy island projects. Currently working on approximately 10 projects in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and South-East Asia, these islands serve as large-scale offshore hubs, enabling the necessary scaling for the next era of offshore wind deployment. By integrating proven technologies on a significantly larger scale, they facilitate a cost-efficient build-out, reducing power transmission costs and fostering synergies between offshore wind and green hydrogen production.
As an independent entity, Copenhagen Energy Islands is predominantly owned by CIP, backed by a consortium of investors with a strong presence in renewable energy infrastructure. Notable members of the founding group include PensionDanmark, PFA, SEB, and Andel, all contributing to the company’s mission of advancing large-scale offshore energy projects globally.
“Our vision is to provide concrete solutions to the global challenge of scaling up renewables. If we want to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, we will need to scale up the deployment of offshore wind and other renewables to an unprecedented level. Today, the challenge for offshore wind is less about building the incremental offshore wind farm, but more how to integrate large-scale offshore wind energy into the global energy systems. We see energy islands as a key tool in solving this challenge and realizing the ambitious offshore wind targets across the globe,” said Jakob Baruël Poulsen, Managing Partner and founder of CIP.
