RWE has installed half of 72 monopile foundations for the wind turbines for its 1.1-gigawatt (GW) Thor offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea. Shipped from Eemshaven, the Netherlands, to the construction site, these were installed by the vessel “Les Alizés”. Each monopile weighs up to 1,500 metric tonne, similar to the weight of 1,000 small cars.
Thor is slated to be world’s first offshore wind farm constructed with turbine steel towers produced with a significantly lower carbon footprint than usual. Moreover,50 percent of the turbines of the wind farm will have recyclable rotor blades. The wind farm is expected to be operational in 2027.
