India’s Wind Power Capacity Reaches 57.44 GW, Strengthening Renewable Energy Growth

India’s wind energy sector has achieved a major milestone, with the country’s total installed wind power capacity reaching 57,443 MW as of June 30, 2026. The growth highlights India’s continued efforts to expand renewable energy infrastructure, strengthen energy security, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

According to information shared in Parliament by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, wind power capacity addition has gained significant momentum over the last three financial years. During the financial year 2025–26, India added 6,057 MW of new wind capacity to the electricity grid, marking a substantial increase compared to 4,151 MW added in 2024–25 and 3,253 MW added in 2023–24.

The expansion in installed capacity has also contributed to higher electricity generation from wind projects. Wind power generation increased to 106 billion units during FY 2025–26, compared with 83 billion units recorded in each of the previous two financial years. The rise in generation reflects both the addition of new projects and improved performance of existing wind assets across the country.

India has also strengthened its position in the global wind energy market. According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) Report 2026, India ranked fourth globally in terms of installed wind power capacity as of December 31, 2025. The achievement underlines the country’s growing role in the global renewable energy transition.

State-wise data shows that Gujarat continues to lead India’s wind energy sector with the highest installed capacity of 16,086 MW. Tamil Nadu follows with 12,273 MW, while Karnataka ranks third with 8,896 MW. Maharashtra and Rajasthan have also emerged as key wind energy hubs with installed capacities of 6,318 MW and 5,516 MW, respectively.

In terms of electricity generation during FY 2025–26, Gujarat recorded the highest wind power output at 33,706 million units. Tamil Nadu generated 24,200 million units, while Karnataka contributed 18,804 million units, making these states the largest contributors to India’s wind power generation.

The government has implemented several policy measures to support the expansion of wind energy capacity. Investments in transmission infrastructure through the Green Energy Corridor Scheme have helped integrate renewable power into the national grid. The waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for renewable energy projects has further improved project economics and encouraged investment.

India also allows up to 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through the automatic route in the renewable energy sector. Additional support measures include tariff-based competitive bidding guidelines, the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme for offshore wind projects, and the Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, which aim to create a stable investment framework.

To maximize the potential of existing wind assets, the government has introduced the National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for older turbines. Other initiatives, including Renewable Consumption Obligations (RCO), Green Energy Open Access Rules, and measures to promote clean power procurement by commercial consumers, are expected to further accelerate wind energy adoption.

With strong policy support, rising investments, and expanding infrastructure, India’s wind power sector is set to play a crucial role in achieving the country’s renewable energy targets and building a sustainable energy future.
