Alternergy Holdings Corporation has started generating electricity from its 128 MW Tanay Wind Project, marking the first delivery of power to the Luzon grid from a wind project awarded under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program II (GEAP II).
The company said the milestone comes exactly three years after securing the project under the July 2023 GEAP II auction, making Alternergy the first among all GEAP II-awarded wind projects to begin supplying electricity to the national grid.
Electricity from the project’s wind turbines is now being transmitted to the Luzon grid through a newly energized 6-hectare substation connected to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) 500 kV transmission network, enabling power delivery to consumers across the region.
The Tanay Wind Project, Alternergy’s largest wind development in Luzon, is expected to become a key contributor to the Philippines’ renewable energy and energy security goals. Once fully operational, the project is projected to generate approximately 283.5 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to supply around 118,125 households, while avoiding nearly 197,780 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
“This is the moment every renewable energy developer looks forward to—the moment a project begins fulfilling its purpose,” said Gerry Magbanua, President of Alternergy Holdings Corporation. He noted that the project represents the culmination of years of collaboration involving employees, contractors, financing partners, government agencies, local government units, and host communities.
Alternergy also acknowledged NGCP’s support in completing the project’s grid integration, stating that the transmission infrastructure enables renewable energy projects such as Tanay to deliver electricity to homes, businesses, and industries across Luzon.
In addition to supplying clean electricity, the project has created employment and economic opportunities for local communities during its development and construction phases. The company said it will continue working with local stakeholders to ensure the long-term benefits of the project are shared with host communities.
The Tanay Wind Project is one of two renewable energy assets recently supported by A Brown Company Inc.’s ₱2.3 billion investment in Alternergy’s wind portfolio. Testing and commissioning activities are ongoing as the company prepares the project for full commercial operations.
The latest milestone supports Alternergy’s broader renewable energy expansion strategy as it continues to grow its portfolio of wind, solar, hydro, and battery energy storage projects across the Philippines.
