As India celebrates the New Year, the country has marked a significant achievement in its renewable energy journey, with an impressive 214 GW of installed green energy capacity by the end of 2024, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This milestone sets India on a strong path toward reaching its bold target of 500 GW from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.

A standout highlight of India’s renewable energy progress in 2024 is its wind energy capacity, which has reached 47.96 GW as of November. This growth is a testament to the country’s concerted efforts in advancing its wind energy projects. Notably, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have emerged as frontrunners in expanding the country’s wind energy footprint, marking substantial progress during the 2023-24 financial year.

Between April and November 2024, India added nearly 15 GW of renewable energy capacity, with wind power contributing significantly to this surge. This marks an almost doubling of capacity compared to the same period in 2023, showcasing the rapid pace of growth within the sector.

India’s wind energy sector is set for further expansion, with total installed and pipeline projects reaching 74.44 GW by November 2024. The country’s dedication to renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, is increasingly evident as it continues to scale up investments and infrastructure, solidifying its position as a global leader in clean energy.

In addition to the growing wind energy capacity, India is pushing forward with initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at establishing the country as a hub for green hydrogen production and export, further diversifying its renewable energy portfolio.

As India moves into 2025, the progress made in wind energy development underscores the country’s strategic focus on sustainable growth and energy independence. With the wind sector continuing to flourish, India is well on its way to realizing its renewable energy goals, offering a model for other nations to follow in the global transition to clean energy.
